US Military Operation on Venezuela Raises Concerns of Future Danish Territory Annexation.

The recent American military action in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have sparked apprehension regarding America's designs on Greenland. Members of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly set their sights on the resource-rich island following the events in South America.

Inflammatory Posts and Official Outrage

Merely hours following the commencement of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to absorb the resource-abundant region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and firm criticism from Danish representatives.

"We are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is equally the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US work together to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat additionally highlighted that Denmark had substantially increased its defence spending this year, earmarking a substantial sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we expect full respect for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the president, stating it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the president's actions, linking it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since assuming office, the American leader has repeatedly alarmed European partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered critically important for national security and potential resource extraction. It already houses the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a notable media appearance, the leader declined to exclude the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during growing great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Local Resistance

In response to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's residents seek independence from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant desire to join the United States. The territory has had the option to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Analyst View: A Credible Scenario?

Military experts are now reconsidering the possibility of such a move. One policy director specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could do anything about it," she concluded.
