Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.

A high-ranking official stated the incident left him stunned and had to be solved promptly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
