White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but not the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
